A drawing of a woman sweeping

Eva Bell: Her Autobiography

Eva Bell: CoverIn the 1960s my great-grandmother, Eva Deisher Bell, wrote down her memories of growing up in southern Illinois and of her life in rural Missouri during the depression era.

With the help of my grandmother and my mother’s cousin I have edited the memoirs and converted them into an interactive e-book.

The book was created using Adobe inDesign, and is available in ePub form, as a .mobi file for the kindle, and as an interactive PDF for reading on a screen or for printing out.

Thesis: Patent Protection in the Pharmaceutical Industry

My bachelor’s thesis: Patent Protection in the Pharmaceutical Industry: Blessing or Curse?

This thesis examines and summarizes a number of empirical studies addressing patent protection in the pharmaceutical industry and its effects on innovation in the last few decades of the 20th century in the U.S. and Europe. Based upon the results of the studies we come to the conclusion that increases in the strength of patent protection have little or no influence on innovative activity in the pharmaceutical industry.

A. Eaton Books

A. Eaton Books was an online bookstore that I ran from 2005 to 2008. The store specialized in out-of-print and scholarly books.  I closed it upon moving to Berlin in September 2008.

An article in Time Out Chicago featuring an interview and a description of the store can be found here.

The website is now defunct, but here is a view of how it looked:

A. Eaton Books Website

Prior to running A. Eaton Books, I was general manager of Myopic Books in Chicago for many years. Before that I worked at Babbit’s Books in Champaign, Illinois and About Books in Bloomington, Illinois. And before that I worked at the Bloomington Public Library, giving me a total of 15 years working with books.

Ancient History

Ancient history: my old Chicago Weather blog, where I helped Chicagoans figure out what to expect on select days, and a reference to the old conglomeratemap project, where I mapped out the holdings of the worlds largest media conglomerates.
